Set in the poorer outskirts of a small West of Ireland town in 1958, A Crucial Week is the coming-of-age of a tormented young man torn between the allure of emigrating to an exotic place and the attractions of staying at home where all is familiar. Tom Murphy's treatment of the well-known dilemma is at turns comic, sad and satiric.Roles
Women
Mother: 55 to 65 - a washerwoman; very poor; stops at nothing to keep her son at home.Mrs. Smith: 55 to 65 - craw-thumping; miserly; fantastic gossip.
Mona: 22 - John Joe's middle-class girlfriend; comes from money; attractive.
Agnes: 28 - Mrs. Smith's silent, dowdy, but surprising daughter.
Men
John Joe: 33 - a gentle dreamer; witty; imaginative; observant; poor.Father: 60 to 65 - grave digger; very poor; unloved by his wife; sings songs for comfort.
Alec: 70 - John Joe's uncle; bachelor; dapper; lonely; witty; gentle soul.
Mr. Brown: 60-ish - the Grocer; pious; frugal; self-righteous; pillar of the community.
Pakey Garvey: 28-35 - lives in London; successful but bitter; cynical humour.
Miko Feely: 45 to 50 - shop assistant; drinker; intelligent; eccentric.
Mullins: 48 to 55 - insurance man; gossip; lonely.
Father Daly: 55 to 60 - a good humoured priest; gambles.
Pension Man: 60-ish - officious, but easy-going and kind.
