Rep 21 presents
The Toronto Debut of
THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE
Written by Martin McDonagh

Rep 21, comprised of the acting alumni of Canadore College's new Theatre Arts Program in North Bay, proudly presents the Toronto premiere of Martin McDonagh's award-winning black comedy, THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE.

Directed by Rod Carley, Coordinator/Creator of the Theatre Arts Program at Canadore College and Artistic Director for Rep 21, THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE is this year's alternative holiday show, running December 2-12 at the Berkeley Street Theatre downstairs.

On a lonely road on the island of Inishmore, someone has killed Wee Thomas, the beloved cat of Padraic, an Irish Liberation Army enforcer. He'll want to know who when he gets back from a stint of torture and chip-shop bombing in Northern Ireland. He loves his cat more than life itself, and someone is going to pay. THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE is a gleeful yet gruesome play that exposes the hypocrisy of political terrorism in rural Ireland.

THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE was first produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in London where it received the Olivier Award for best comedy in 2001. It was next produced off-Broadway, then transferred to Broadway in 2006 where it was nominated for both a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play.

Born in England to Irish parents, Martin McDonagh has earned critical acclaim and success in both his homeland and North American. THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE is one of six plays which are located in and around County Galway, where McDonagh spent his childhood summers. A Tony and Olivier award-winning playwright, McDonagh also received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for In Bruges.

A staple of the 90s theatre scene in Toronto, Rod Carley is an award-winning director, actor, playwright, teacher, adaptor, dramaturg, designer and producer. He moved to North Bay eleven years ago to help found the Nipissing Stage Company where he served as Artistic Director for six seasons, committed to developing the work of Northern Ontario writers. This year Rod won TVO's Big Ideas/Best Lecturer competition. Rod has directed and produced over 95 productions to date, both nationally and internationally, ranging from the classics to the development of new Canadian work.
